We land at the Maldives at Hulhule Airport on August 18th from Colombo, capital of the Sri Lanka, where we were the week before for a tour.

It’s cloudy and it is going to rain.

After one hour waiting at the Maldivian Air Taxi, we caught a seaplane for our first stop at the Maldives: Madoogali. After 25 minutes flight, we land near the island where we find a dhoni for the island.

After lunch, we go around the Island and we notice that nothing has changed from last August: it is always simple and beautiful.
Unfortunately the bad weather will last until the end of our stay.

The diving has changed: Lele and Rossana are no more there, but there is Samantha who worked with them years ago, and Marzia. Both, together with two Maldivian dive masters, take care of the Italian divers. The team is made up by these two girls, by a German instructor, by two Maldivian dive masters and by the Maldivian base leader. The equipment is brand new as it has been replaced by the new management.
Samantha’s experience allows a perfect assistance to the divers who can fully enjoy the diving. The diving deals also with water sports (catamaran, windsurf, jet ski and canoeing) and of the snorkeling trips by boat.

Another difference from the previous management is the buffet also at dinner, which is a nice thing.
A very good variety of vegetables, two types of pasta and rice, pizza, focaccia, fish and meat, cakes and fruits.
We meet Libero, the current Azemar assistant, who in the next two months will work with other two guys. He tells us he is trying to improve the village and help the customers as much as he can.
Despite the bad weather, on the 20th we decide to have lunch at Nika. Giovanni Bellazzi welcomes us and shows us how the island is changed from our last visit.

Near the Restaurant there is the "Pepi Bar", a new bar, bigger than the one on the other side of the Island.

Another news are the parrots, very colorful and nice with the guests.

The morning of the 21 we leave with the seaplane and go to Hulhule, where after two hours we leave for Lily Beach.

The resort was built in 1994 and has been reopened on April 2009 after a complete restructuring and is located in the Ari South atoll.

The name of the island hosting the resort is Huvahendhoo and it is about 550 meters long and 100 meters width. A few minutes are enough to go around it.

After the arrival and the check-in we went to our room, overwater no. 314, a Deluxe Water Villa. They are 36 and are about 136 sqm.

When we open the door, we see a wide window on the floor in the area which divides the bathroom from the bedroom.

The Villa piers are made by a special wood that can resist up to 50 years in the sea. During our stay, we will discover the care in preserving the natural status of the island, by taking care of the reef and of the nature and by using ecological materials.
At about 1 pm we go to the main Restaurant, the Lily Maa Restaurant for the lunch that, as the breakfast, is buffet. The restaurant is partially closed and partially opened. On the external wooden floor there are tables were you can have your lunch. Tables are not reserved but can be chosen on the spot.

There are rich buffets of starters, pasta cooked on the spot, of second courses of flesh and meat cooked in several ways and a wide choice of cold cuts, cheeses, nuts and vegetables, in addition to the buffets of cakes and fruits. Dinner is always served at the table and there is a choice among four different main courses. The buffets of starters, cakes and fruits are always at the guest disposal. Twice a week there is a grill with meat, fish and king prawns. A kid’s menu is always available.

In addition to the main restaurant, there is also the Tamarind, an a la carte restaurant which offers Indian and Chinese specialties which is located at the beginning of the Overwater pier. The Diving is managed by the Ocean-Pro. The base leader is Juergen, a German guy speaking a little bit of Italian. There are about 40 diving spots around the Island. If you decide to dive, you find the diving equipment directly on the boat. Each guest prepares its own and when ready, the diving starts.

At the return, the basket is brought to the diving area and the equipment is washed and dried, ready for a new diving. Paolo went to two diving spots: Velaghali Thila and Endici Thila. Both were beautiful, full of fishes and very colorful. It is possible to see manta rays between June and July or during the spring, by crossing the atoll and arriving to Vangali. If you dive the full day, you can search the whale shark in Maarmigili, in the South point of the Ari atoll.

On the 22 we decide to visit the different types of rooms.
We start with the 4 Sunset Water Suites that, with the Deluxe Water Villa, belong to the Overweater category. They are 182 sqm large rooms, located at the end of the Overwater pier. In comparison to the Deluxe Water Villa, they have a room between the bedroom and the bathroom which can be used as a living room or as an additional room for 4 adults and two children. The swimming pool on the veranda is the double of the Deluxe one.

The 16 Lagoon Villa, on the Restaurant side, are bungalows on the water with direct access to the lagoon. They are 90 sqm large and they have all the accessories of the Water Villas.

There are also 6 Beach Family Villas, similar to the Beach Villas, but 136 sqm wide. They are 2 communicating Beach Villas, each rooms has its private bathroom and are suitable for families with children. It is suitable also for 4 adults and 2 children.

All Beach Villas are located on the north side of the island on a beautiful beach. On that side, the lagoon is 20/30 meter wider. Then you find the reef. It is a good solution for those who wish to swim or to snorkel.

During our stay we snorkel on both sides of the island. There are 8 entry points to the reef in order to avoid problems and not to damage it. From the restaurant side, the reef is very close to the beach and can be easily reached. We left from our water bungalow and reached it with no difficulty. We found a reef, reach of corals in a good shape and with different sizes. It’s a wall that goes down straight and is 30 meter deep.

Anemones with relative clown fishes, unicorn fishes, fusilier fish, a shoal of 200/300 carangidaes, tuna fish, trumpetfish, glass fish and many other barrier fish you can only see when diving.
On the oppositeside, the reef is a bit further from the Beach Villas, but the show you can enjoy is also fascinating: there are fewer fish than the other side, but bigger corals, coloured and in very good shape. This is definitely one of the most beautiful reefs we’ve seen because it seems that at Lily Beach the Nile has never flowed!
The snorkeling equipment is supplied free.

On the 25th we rent a dhoni and have a look around the island.
We stop at Vilamendhoo and Ranveli, where we meet six Tuscan guys with whom we have lunch. They are practically the only guests on the island this week.

Vilamendhoo is 800 metres long and 300 metres wide. It is very green and its widest beaches are at opposite ends of the island. Ranveli is a small island with a beach practically only on one side. The restaurant overwater is very nice. You can enjoy a wonderful view from it. In both islands we take images to the rooms and to the common areas in order to update our image galleries.

New images of Vilamendhoo

After lunch we leave Ranveli and go around the new resorts which are currently under construction in that area.

One of those is Kudarah.

In Machchafushi the construction works go on. In Vakarufalhi they are going to finish building the new overwaters, the reception and some other structures. It may open in November, even though we have some doubt whether it would be ready on the expected time.

We pass by Maafushivaru with a dhoni, but for arrival and departure problems they don’t give us the permission to get off the boat. After circumnavigating the island, we head to Lily Beach, where we enjoy our last hours indulging in the sun.

The following morning we wake up at 4:30 a.m. and head to Hulhule with the seaplane.

When we leave Lily Beach we feel a little sad: it isn’t certainly a resort accessible to all from an economic point of view, but the lucky people who can afford it will find an elegant but informal atmosphere, excellent food, a fantastic reef, high quality services and kind personnel always ready to help you.

At 10:00 a.m., we take a domestic flight to reach the south, in particular Gaafu Alifu Atoll. After 50 minutes flight we land at Kaadedhdhoo Airport, which is 405 kilometres far from Hulhule.

A speedboat has been waiting for us and after 1-hour navigation we reach our new destination. We are at Park Hyatt Hadahaa Hadahaa, a village located on the island of Hadahaa, which is 56 kilometres far from the equator. Here the clocks are one hour forward compared with Malè.

The resort opened on August 15 and it is currently under construction due to the bad weather that hit the Maldives for consecutive 15 days this year.

It is 420x300 meters and consists of 14 Overwater Aqua Villas and 36 Island Villas, 20 of which have a 12 m2 private pool for a total of 120 square meters. They have chosen Island Villa n.11 with swimming pool for us. It is located in the north east of the island.

The whole structure is made of wood, with wide glass windows that opens on to an external sundeck which leads to a swimming pool and directly to the sea.

The bed is set in the centre of the room, which includes all the comforts: air-conditioning, mini bar, 37" plasma TV, CDs and DVDs, I-pod docking station, direct-dial telephone, tea and coffee maker, Nespresso coffee machine, free internet connection. A Wi-Fi connection will be soon available. A sliding door separates the bedroom from the bathroom. They are similar to each other in size. There are two areas, one indoor and the other outdoor.

The beach is a short two-minute walk from your front door. Lounge chairs are provided on the beach for the guests of the room.

The Island Villas (100mq) do not offer private pools. Their interiors are similar to those of the other villas, while outside they only have a veranda with two chairs and a beach umbrella.

All the Villas are surrounded by a lush vegetation and offer privacy and tranquillity.

The 14 overwaters of 110 m2 are made of a large room and offer the same facilities as the Villas.

The room has a wide glass door that faces a terrace where we find two sun beds and a big couch. The structure is entirely made of wood, reflecting the style used for the island construction. The overwaters have been built behind the reef, minimizing the environmental footprint of the resort.

In the northern part of the island there are common areas, all close to each other.

At the end of the arrival pier we find the Reception. The several parts that compose the higher section of the structure have been created in Haa Atoll, in a carpentry that produces dhoni, and have been carried and put together on the island. The effect is truly remarkable: the roof has the shape of an upset dhoni.

Next to the swimming pool there is the Bell's bar, whose name comes from H.C.P.Bell, an English archaeologist who sojourned at the Maldives from 1879 to 1922. He explored the Maldives to study in depth the pre-Islamic age and everything had remained from the Buddhist culture. The bar is specialized in cocktails served with precious cigars.

Behind this area, next to the pier of the overwaters, there is the Battuta’s, a restaurant where you can taste Maldivian specialities. The name comes from Muhammad Ibn'Battuta, a Moorish traveller lived in 1300 who ventured to Sumatra and China, Southern Russia, the Maldives, the Eastern coasts of Africa and Timuctu. His journeys made him the most famous traveller of the Medieval Age.

Chan Soo Khian is leader of the design team for Park Hyatt Hadahaa, founder and principal maker of Singapore-based SCDA Architects. The company received the prestigious Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Worldwide Award for one of its projects in Singapore and recently, he got the “Emergent Architecture in Asia” prize. In 2006, Khian was titled Designer of the year by the Design Award President of Singapore.

Soo Khian’s style is evident. He promotes a philosophy of architecture that tries to bring out the best of culture, traditions and local material. The design and the building were based on environmental impact studies prior to implementation. According to this spirit of environmental management, Soo Khian is careful to guarantee that his project promotes the collection and recycle of rainwater through various passages of filtering and purification for several uses: irrigation, running water for bathrooms (shower, basin, bath and toilet), swimming pools and also natural and still water served on the table, avoiding the disposal of at least 100.000 plastic bottles a year.

One of the flagships of this island is the reef, certainly the most beautiful one we have seen up to now in our journeys. Hundred and hundred of mushrooms of madrepore of various dimensions: either few centimetres to ¾ metres of diameter. Proper coral plants with branches that can reach the 20 cm of diameter, all alive and white, sky blue or yellow coloured.

We see lots of anemones of various dimensions, even in only few centimetres of water. Fish of different sizes and varieties complete this incredible and uncontaminated reef.

The few days left go by fast among snorkelling, relaxing and photographic tours.

The construction of the resort hasn’t been finished yet. It will be open to the public from the second half of September on and it will be a very exclusive one.
The morning of the 29 we leave this corner on paradise and go to Malè.

We would stop three days in the capital before returning to Italy, but on the 31 of August we decide to organise a visit to Olhuveli at the eleventh hour, where we stop only for one night.

The village is located in Malè South Atoll, only 50 minutes far by speedboat. We leave in the late morning in order to reach the island before lunch-time.

We stay at Olhuveli only one night and the morning of 1st September the speedboat takes us to Hululhe. At 13:30 pm our flight Air Italy takes off and brings us back to our country.

Once again we say goodbye to our beloved islands.

See you next time!
